This position is appropriate for 2nd or 3rd year law students and recent law graduates with background in family law. The internship, or externship, involves hands-on training in family law practice and LGBTQ family practice with direct supervision and mentoring.

Current cases include collaborative divorce mediation, sperm donor agreements, lesbian second parent adoption, child support litigation and negotiation, premarital agreements after mediation, and child custody litigation.

Depending on the interests and ability of the student, this internship could involve:

  • Document drafting, filing, and procedure for divorce, adoption, child support, sperm donor agreements, and premarital agreements.
  • Attendance at client meetings and court appearances
  • Legal Research and writing

This internship requires excellent research and writing skills and at least a basic family law class, and an ideal candidate will have taken classes on assisted reproduction, adoption, and/or LGBTQ law.

The Spring 2018 internship/externship schedule may be crafted flexibly to the intern's school schedule and training needs, but requires a commitment of at least 2 work days or 15 hours/week during business hours at the office.

The internship is unpaid, but the intern/extern will receive substantial direct mentoring and work side-by-side with our attorneys. We are happy to comply with school requirements for securing externship course credit, and we have served as an externship placement for Brooklyn Law School and New York Law School for several years. Opportunity exists for mentoring on specific skill development, recommendation letter and references/connections for small firm, solo practice, or legal service/non-profit/LGBTQ practice at the end of the semester.

To apply, please send your resume, a writing sample containing evidence of excellent research skills, and a letter explaining how your interests are a good fit for this practice with the subject line “Application for Internship/Externship” to Diana Adams Law & Mediation, PLLC at  Please clearly indicate that you are applying for Spring 2018.
